Andrew Sinkov, Evernote VP of Marketing: Turkish Market Makes Us Excited A Lot

You know what they say about those who don’t forget anything: The memory of an elephant! This is why the logo of Evernote is perfect to describe its function.

Nowadays we live in a world where everything is fast as speed of light. We consume fast, decide fast, eat fast. We live fast. In this ‘chaos’ it’s impossible to remember everything that comes to our mind. This is also unacceptable in business life where the idea is equal to money. Therefore many applications were launched to make us remember easily. But the last one is quite different from the others: Evernote.

Evernote founders call it as ‘your external brain’. Evernote helps people to remember the important things that they hear, see, like, and even think in their business and personal life via their tablets, smart phones, PCs etc, can keep notes as in audio, note, and photo online and provides you access them via different platforms. Besides the free version there is also a ‘business’ version which helps you share and see what your colleagues do, think and save. This helps the synergy in the company.

Evernote has recently launched its applications in Turkish. So we interviewed Andrew Sinkov, VP of Marketing at Evernote, via Skype. During the interview I got to know more about my Evernote. :)

Let’s start with the basic question. What is Evernote?

A great way for people to remember what is important for them in their life. It allows you to capture anything from any device.

[pullquote align=”right”]We have 2 services; Free and Premium. Premium service is 5 dollars per month. It is designed for active users. The longer you use the more you want to take advantage of the Premium features. It takes notes offline too. The more you use the more you decide to pay us. :)[/pullquote]

How many users do you have currently in the world?

45 million. 1/3 of them are users in USA.

How many users do you have in Turkey?

270 thousand.

You also launched Turkish language for Evernote. What is the importance of Turkish market for you?

Turkey is a new and exciting market for us. We have done number of events already which were very successful. It is growing quickly. We want to help people everywhere in the world to remember everything but population and the number of mobile users in Turkey makes us excited.

What is your business model? How do you profit?

We have 2 services; Free and Premium. Premium service is 5 dollars per month. It is designed for active users. The longer you use the more you want to take advantage of the Premium features. It takes notes offline too. The more you use the more you decide to pay us. :)

There are many applications and services that help us ‘remember’ things. What makes Evernote different?

In fact it is very different. The primary difference is that Evernote is very complementary. Remembering should just include documents and files but thoughts and ideas too. Knowledge doesn’t have a particular file type.
With Evernote Business the idea is; if you work in a small company you don’t necessarily know what your team knows. You don’t know what the person sitting next to you know or do. But you are all working in the same company. So we created Business Notebook. Personal notebooks can be added to this account too. You can easily share the Business netbooks and notes with your coworkers. And if you leave the company, you go with your Evernote but business one stays in the company.
You have launched ‘Evernote Business’. What does it help with besides Premium and Free versions?

Two-thirds of Evernote users say that they use Evernote at work or it helps with their work lives a lot. But interestingly only 15% use it because their company provided them. The rest choose to use it by themselves because it’s useful. We use it every day too. We thought what would make Evernote a great tool for employees, companies, and IT Administrators. We added new and very powerful features which are more beneficial to users and IT administrators. The idea is; if you work in a small company you don’t necessarily know what your team knows. You don’t know what the person sitting next to you know or do. But you are all working in the same company. So we created Business Notebook. 1 account. Personal notebooks can be added to this account too. You can easily share the Business netbooks and notes with your coworkers. And if you leave the company, you go with your Evernote but business one stays in the company.

And on Evernote Mac, when you look at business library and search to see what other people have; you start typing a note and as you type it starts looking for related content in coworker’s notebook. So the whole company has a collected idea and notebook. It saves you a lot of time and effort.

In the news on internet it says that Evernote works in every platform except  Linux …

That doesn’t mean it’s entirely true. There are third party developers built for Linux. It’s just we didn’t do it. But it exists.

We are almost at the end of 2012. Have you reached your goals?

Yes, we reached every goal. We are a private company so I can’t share any numbers but what I can definitely say is that we are growing incredibly fast.

What are your goals by the end of the first quarter of 2013?

This is a forever project. It’s not just 2012 or 2013. Evernote has 280 employees. We always primarily focus on the core product; Free Evernote. We focus on making it better and better all the time. We have 8 more products. We have teams dedicated to these products.
